Capcom comment further on Lost Planet 2 cuts

When Critical Gamer asked Capcom if they were prepared to comment further on the recently reported Lost Planet 2 cuts, their UK PR manager Leo Tan replied. This is the full statement they issued to us:

Capcom’s development teams have a reputation for creating some of the highest quality titles in the industry such as Resident Evil 5 and Street Fighter IV. Editing the amount of content released with the final version of any game is a standard practice during game development. Edits to the initial concept of a game can come from a number of sources including the amount of time given to develop the title, hardware constraints, story elements, or other factors that can detract from the experience. We are confident that consumers will not be disappointed with Lost Planet 2 and the variety of massive Akrid, powerful vital suits, beautiful environments and deep level of customization included in the final product.”

Ostensibly they’re saying ‘Lost Planet 2 is still great, please buy it’. And who can blame them? The following is pure speculation:

Is there anything to be gleaned from reading between the lines? Arguably, the DVD storage media could be filed under ‘other factors that can detract from the experience’ or possibly even ‘hardware constraints’. Most interesting however, is mention of edits to the ‘initial concept’ of a game. Could this mean that Lost Planet 2 was intended to be more ambitious a project than the finished product, and the Xbox 360′s DVD media held it back beyond mere content cuts?

It is interesting to speculate, at the very least, why multiformat games are exactly the same on DVD (maximum capacity approximately 9gb) and blu ray (maximum capacity approximately 50gb).

GTAIV, Resident Evil 5, Lost Planet 1 & 2, Devil May Cry, FFXIII – all missed opportunities as far as lengthening the game play. Sure graphics are better this gen, but at the cost of play times. All the above are finished in less than 10 hours. Too bad the companies forgot their PlayStation roots and betrayed gamers by accepting payoffs to support the size constrained xbox2. M$ ensured a place at the table by buying their way to it. They also ensured gamers would end up over paying for content that should be a part of the initial game.

let me correct just that last piece for you multiformat games are not the same cuz DVD is not HD lets put a DVD in my PS3 and upscale it and compare it to my blu-ray shall-we? up to the devs if they can make good GFX after that anyways if i wer capcom or any DEV id say screw it put more on PS3.

  3. It the same because Capcom realizes that Xbox sales way more than PS3, so they don’t want to piss 360 gamers

  4. You can also file Blu-Ray drive under “‘other factors that can detract from the experience’ or possibly even ‘hardware constraints’” due to the fact that you can not read information off the disc as fast as a DVD drive. Hence why PS3 games usually require “Installation”

You can file your comment under “relevant 1 year ago” because games like Uncharted 2, Killzone 2, Infamous, and the upcoming God of War 3 don’t require installation. It’s called developing on the PS3 as a lead platform and not porting over the lead 360 games. Know the competition before you start bashing them. Now then, go play COD MW2 with 10 year olds yelling at you on XBL. You should just read the articles, like I USUALLY do, and keep your ignorant comments to yourself.

      • That’s a pretty stupid argument SmilemaN. Bluray speed being slower then DVD is a FACT.
Perhaps Killzone 2, Infamous, and the upcoming God of War 3 can stream the game fine directly from bluray without requiring installation, but they could have streamed the game FASTER if they were played from a DVD. So they were effectively limited by the bluray drive and designed around this limitation.

Both the Bluray speed and DVD storage capacity can be nullified by installing the game to the HD, so it’s not a real issue. Current gen consoles are more limited by available video RAM (especially the PS3) and that’s why 1080p games are rare to find.

  5. I’m not going to buy this game at launch or full price!
These suckers think they can ripp me off, developers are starting to do this sh* on purpose!

They recently said that both consoles will have “identical” versions. Which means, all the cut things that were removed on Xbox 360 WILL also be removed on PS3!
It’s just stupid! Who knows if we’ll pay for the removed contents based on DLC or not.

Why the hell can’t they use up the ps3′s space instead? who cares if the XBox 360′s disc has limited space. That’s what you get when you build a NEXT GEN console with 2005 (last gen) counterparts.

    F***ing rip off!
Everyone is always making the ps3 version look crap!

  6. DVDs cannot hold more than 8.5g, also DVD when burned can only accomodate less than 8.5g, there’s always allowance of space.
