Black ties and sharp suits rushed to The Brewery in London last night for the ninth annual MCV Industry Excellence Awards that celebrate the biggest gaming achievements of the last 12 months. Over 620 games industry professionals representing 127 companies were in attendance for the event, hosted by Iain Lee.
Ubisoft merrily skipped away from the evening having scooped both of the special recognition awards; the overall Grand Prix collected by the company’s CEO and co-founder Yves Guillemot, and the MCV Retail Advisory Board’s Special Recognition prize for sales director Darren Bowen.
Microsoft didn’t do too badly either, taking away the Best Use of Social Media award for the Fable III Kingmaker app, the Trade Marketing Team award and the New Games Brand award for Dance Central.
Games peripheral company Gioteck walked away with the Peripherals & Accessories award. Matt Lamprell, Gioteck MD, said “Being number one and awarded for being exceptional is what we have been striving for. After tonight we have finally achieved this, however it has made us realise that the ultimate accolade is having our peers believe in the Gioteck brand.”
The majority of the awards are decided upon by a panel of 70 judges, whilst the Grand Prix recipient is selected by the MCV editorial team for the highest levels of success, support and efficiency at trade level.
“The diversity of winners illustrates the level of change going on in the games market right now. But there is clearly just as much innovation, energy and ambition as ever,” said Stuart Dinsey, MCV publisher and Intent Media managing director.
“The MCV Awards demonstrate the strength and success of the UK games business and we’d like to thank everyone who participated across retail, distribution, media and publishing.”
