Less than nine months after the successful release of Battlefield 3, EA have announced that, surprise surprise, Battlefield 4 is in the process of development.
In what could be construed as a cynical way of boosting sales of the new Medal of Honor: Warfighter, EA have confirmed that those who pre-order Warfighter will have early access to the Battlefield 4 Beta when it goes live in autumn 2013, which makes an October or November release for the game likely. Considering the Battlefield 3 Beta was ‘exclusive’ with the original Medal of Honor for around two days before going public, it remains to be seen if it will be worthwhile pre-ordering a game which we don’t know much about, purely to get access to the latest DICE creation.
What this means for Battlefield 3 is unclear but, with most of the servers now hosted by the paying public, it could mean a mass exodus of players and thereby servers to the new game, which could have an effect on the game’s long term online availability. However with no formats listed for Battlefield 4, it could turn out that the game is being readied for the next generation of consoles, which would make them quite a tempting proposition if they are also being prepped for release in Winter 2013/14.
